The performance of composite materials greatly depends on how well fibres adhere to the matrix. Because of this, Textechno developed the FIMATEST system with the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (IPF) and the Bremen Fibre Institute (FIBRE). As a result, a versatile and reproducible single-fibre pull-out test is now available worldwide. The FIMATEST system includes two devices. First, the partially automated embedding station, FIMABOND, can handle all types of fibres and matrices. Next, a high-precision pull-out device is an accessory to Textechno’s FAVIMAT+ tester. Therefore, the system covers a wide range of testing needs. Getting reproducible pull-out results requires precise embedding of the fibre in the matrix. Specifically, the fibre must sit exactly at the center of the matrix droplet to prevent not wanted shear forces. FIMABOND ensures this exact placement. Certainly, the Fibre-Matrix Adhesion Tester can also measure the contact angle between fibre and matrix during embedding. Moreover, it measures this optically, without reference surfaces, and operates at temperatures up to 400°C. Additionally, the pull-out accessory for FAVIMAT+ is easy to install and use. A microscopic camera further makes clamp alignment quick and accurate. The direct clamping of the fibre makes the pull-out test fast and efficient – no need for glues and tedious handling. When the fibre is clamped the FAVIMAT+ automatically starts the pull-out test and records the force/displacement-curve. Importantly, the FIMATEST system received the JEC World 2016 Innovation Award. Furthermore, it was recently standardized internationally as ISO 19375. |
